Image editing inside chat is genuinely useful when it works and infuriating when it doesn't. The two failure modes are over-editing (changing things outside the requested region) and identity drift (the subject's face shifts across edits).

GPT-5.5 has the strongest identity preservation in our testing, paired with reasonable inpainting. Gemini-3 Pro is comparable on prompt fidelity but more prone to identity drift. Claude wraps third-party tools rather than running native edits, which is sometimes better and sometimes worse.

For serious image editing work, dedicated tools (Adobe Firefly, FLUX in-context, Magnific) still beat chat models.
